The software technology known as 8 Bit was responsible for the rapid spread and unprecedented popularity of video games in the '70s and '80s. Primitive though they were, those games grabbed the imagination of an entire generation. And now that many of them have grown up to become motion designers, they are summoning up their childhood memories to incorporate aspects of them into their latest digital creations, be they music videos, smartphone games or short movies, thus giving a 30-year-old sub-culture a whole new lease of life.

Let the games begin — again

Every era produces its own particular youth culture. In the '60s, it was Space Age design, "swinging" London, hippies, Woodstock, Twiggy, Andy Warhol, the Beach Boys and the Beatles. The late-'70s-'80s gave us New Wave, synth-pop, break-dancing, Michael Jackson … and video games! If you are a 20-30-something, you probably grew up with Atari and NES (Nintendo Entertainment System), Pac-Man and Space Invaders. Who among us has not had the experience of escaping from the Fire Flower and being attacked by little mushrooms or turtles?

Most fascinating about Steffen Knoell’s works is that it can be seen even if only a very few elements are used. Otherwise it could end up as a very overwhelmed layout.

"I believe strongly that designers have a responsibility to embrace a smart, sustainable, and responsible approach to our printed pieces. We must educate ourselves about these processes and then, in turn, educate our clients. This starts with economical and efficient use of materials in our designs."
